Personal Website Revived

Just a quick note to say that my personal website, www.jackmitchell.ca, has just undergone a big revamp and is now looking quite neat, if I do say so myself.  Some new content, too, under “Essays” and “Lyric,” with everything generally more logically organised and easily accessible.  An iPhone theme, at least on the front page!

  1. That is one awesome website ya got there, Dr. Mitchell. Was there a template (I wanted to say an app) for that? Of course, it helps when you have so much content to put on it. A new book! I look forward to reading it.

    • Thanks, Jenn! I’m psyched about writing the new book: I”m now reading a lot about the ancient Gauls.

No template, it was just me doing a bit of photoshopping; I was sitting here trying to figure out how to get a lot of information into a small space elegantly, thinking I could put the icons in rows instead of one long column like I’ve always done, and the iPhone look suddenly clicked. Took a bit of wrangling (esp. since I don’t know Photoshop that well) to get an icon template and then it was really straightforward. The biggest challenge was then gluing the icons onto the high-res picture of somebody’s iPhone that I found: I had to redraw the grey line around the edge, put a big black rectangle over the main black area of the main picture, and then add a Lighting Effect to that new black rectangle: this let me just glue the new icons overtop of the background image without mismatching the light sources for the background and the new icons.

  2. Brilliant new website, Jack! Your iPhone motif looks so good that one could be forgiven for assuming that it was the creation of a professional web designer!
